Support for Academically Weak Students
01
A multi-pronged remedial support system employs active pedagogical techniques — quizzes, puzzles, animations, student seminars, case studies and live demonstrations. Post-internal assessment problem-solving sessions are held in class to reinforce core concepts. Expert talks, guest lectures, industry seminars and targeted workshops supplement classroom learning. Daily five-minute mindfulness meditation at the start of the first period helps students improve focus and reduce exam anxiety. [seeded]
Mentoring & Academic Excellence Programme
02
Gold medals are awarded annually to semester toppers in the 5th to 8th semesters to recognise academic excellence. Class topper awards are presented at the end of every academic year. Mini-project completion before graduation ensures every student gains hands-on design experience in their chosen specialisation. [seeded]
Software Training for Industry Readiness
03
Add-on and bridge courses in STAAD.Pro, AutoCAD, ANSYS Workbench and Revit Architecture are offered free to all civil engineering students. These courses are conducted by department faculty and are aligned with current industry requirements in structural design, infrastructure planning and Building Information Modelling (BIM). [seeded]
Internship via SGBIT Consultancy Services
04
The SGBIT Consultancy Cell provides bright and motivated students with live project internship opportunities under licensed engineers. Students handle real structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering assignments, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional practice. [seeded]
Webinars on Cutting-Edge Technologies
05
The department has organised 20+ webinars (2020–2022) featuring speakers from IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, ISRO, RITES, UltraTech, National Institute of Hydrology and international universities. Topics span concrete technology, geotechnical challenges, smart cities, climate change and structural design — keeping faculty and students abreast of the latest developments. [seeded]
Industry-Institute Bridge: Gaansinchan Sessions
06
"Gaansinchan" — a monthly knowledge-sharing session held every last Friday from 6–8 PM — connects alumni and industry professionals with current students. Consultancy problems from real projects are assigned to student teams, helping them develop problem-solving skills and professional communication in a real-world context. [seeded]
Industrial Site Visits
07
Structured industrial visits are conducted each semester to cement plants, dam sites, port construction zones, smart city command centres and geotechnical investigation sites. These visits ground theoretical study in observable practice, helping students understand scale, project management, safety protocols and engineering decision-making. [seeded]
Faculty Development & Research Culture
08
Faculty are actively encouraged to attend Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) on emerging technologies in civil engineering. The department supports and promotes Ph.D. registration, research publication in SCOPUS-indexed journals, and participation in funded research via KSCST, VTU, and DST schemes. The department is a VTU-recognised Research Centre with 16 active Ph.D. scholars. [seeded]
