The Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities (BS&H) at SGBIT serves as the foundational backbone for all engineering programmes, offering first-year courses in Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics, English, and Environmental Science.

The department has a highly qualified faculty — including PhD holders in Chemistry and Physics — who employ activity-based and project-based learning to bridge the gap between academic concepts and industry expectations. Infrastructure includes dedicated Chemistry Lab (157.76 sq.m.), Physics Lab (157 sq.m.), and four specialized learning labs: Brahmagupta, Susharuta, Baudhayana, and Bhaskara.

The department plays a vital role in the SGBIT first-year experience through the Student Induction Programme, parent-teacher meetings, and a structured mentoring system that ensures every student successfully navigates the transition into engineering education.
