The Department of Civil Engineering at S. G. Balekundri Institute of Technology (SGBIT), Belagavi, was established in 2010 with an intake of 60 students. The intake was expanded to 120 students in 2014 to meet growing industry demand. In 2014, the department launched the prestigious M.Tech in Structural Engineering programme with an intake of 18 students. In 2016-17, the department earned recognition as a VTU Research Centre, underscoring its commitment to advanced research and innovation.

The department offers a rigorous curriculum focused on core civil engineering domains including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, and surveying. Students develop both analytical and practical skills through well-equipped laboratories, quality faculty guidance, and active industry engagement.

Departmental activities include national and international conferences, technical workshops, industrial site visits, guest lectures from eminent professionals, and collaborative MoU-based projects with leading organisations. The department has produced graduates who have excelled in construction, consulting, government services, research, and entrepreneurship across India and abroad.
