Ragging is a Criminal Offence!

As per the directives of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India and AICTE/UGC regulations, ragging in any form is strictly prohibited on campus, in hostels, buses, and any other location. Persons found guilty of ragging and/or abetting ragging shall be liable to be punished as per applicable laws.

What Constitutes Ragging?

As per UGC Regulations, ragging constitutes one or more of the following acts:

1

Any conduct by spoken words, emails, posts, or actions that tease, treat, or handle freshers or junior students with rudeness.

2

Rowdy or undisciplined activities that cause or are likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm.

3

Asking or forcing students to perform acts that generate shame, torment, embarrassment, or adversely affect their physique or psyche.

4

Activities that prevent or disrupt regular academic activities of any student.

5

Exploiting the services of students for completing academic tasks assigned to another student.

6

Financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a junior student by senior students.

7

Physical abuse including all variants of it — sexual abuse, stripping, bodily harm caused to freshers or junior students.

8

Verbal abuse through emails, social media posts, or public insult by coercing a junior student.

9

Any act that affects mental health and self-confidence of students or induces a sense of inferiority or shame.

Aims

Aims & Objectives

The Anti-Ragging Committee works towards creating a safe and inclusive academic environment through the following objectives:

  • Ensure swift punishment for students found engaging in or abetting ragging.
  • Create awareness among students about AICTE/UGC anti-ragging regulations.
  • Organize personality development and orientation activities for fresher students.
  • Maintain a monitoring system via Flying Squads during the critical orientation period.
Duties

Responsibilities

The Anti-Ragging Committee has the following key responsibilities:

Monitor Flying Squad
Oversee and advise the Flying Squad to handle any ragging incidents immediately.
Campus Vigilance
Monitor all student aggregation points — classrooms, canteens, buses, playgrounds, and hostels.
Student Education
Educate students on what constitutes ragging and the legal consequences.
Orientation Activities
Organize personality development programs during the freshers orientation period.
HOD Coordination
Coordinate with HODs to brief senior students about ragging consequences at the start of each academic year.

SGBIT is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful and harassment-free campus environment. Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence under UGC Regulations and IPC. Any student found indulging in ragging will face immediate disciplinary action including expulsion.

About Anti-Ragging Policy

In accordance with UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009, SGBIT has constituted an Anti-Ragging Committee and a Monitoring Cell.

Ragging includes any act that causes physical or psychological harm, discomfort, embarrassment, disgrace, or humiliation to any student in any form. Ragging is both a criminal and civil offence under Indian law.

All students and their parents are required to submit a signed Anti-Ragging Affidavit at the time of admission. This affidavit is available on the AICTE web portal.

UGC Regulation on Ragging

Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts:
• Any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student
• Indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities by any student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student
• Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student
• Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher
• Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students
• Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student by students
• Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health or person
• Any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, post, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student
• Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student
